Murals and Laneways of the West End: Stories of Vancouver Through Art

Vancouver’s West End is more than its scenic views and calm streets; it’s also home to a vibrant tapestry of public art. Murals adorn walls and alleyways, telling stories of culture, community, and creativity. These works are not just decorative—they’re expressions of identity and resilience, capturing the heart of the neighbourhood.

The origins of the West End Murals

The West End laneway mural project was born out of a unique collaboration between the Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) and the West End Business Improvement Association. While VMF ceased operations this year due to financial constraints, their legacy lives on through these breathtaking murals. This initiative was tied to Vancouver’s Downtown Density Project, which led to the naming of laneways in the West End to accommodate new homes and provide addresses for residences along these pathways. This effort to reimagine the laneways also inspired the introduction of public art to honor the history, culture, and characters of the local community.

The naming of these laneways celebrates historical figures who contributed to Vancouver’s story. For example, “Rosemary Brown Lane” honors Rosemary Brown, a trailblazing politician and social justice advocate, while “Ted Northe Lane” pays tribute to Ted Northe, a pioneering LGBTQ+ activist. This blend of history and art ensures that these spaces are not only functional but also culturally rich and deeply rooted in the West End’s identity.

Local artists and meaningful murals

The West End mural collection features works from renowned and emerging artists, each contributing a distinct voice to the city’s artistic landscape. Notable contributors include:

  • Jody Broomfield: A Coast Salish artist whose works highlight Indigenous stories and heritage through intricate designs.
  • Kirk Gower: Celebrated for his striking portraiture, which captures the range of human emotion and connection with intricate details and unexpected associations.
  • Matt Hanns Schroeter: A local artist known for his distinctive and dynamic designs.

These artists—along with others—have transformed the West End into a living gallery, offering both locals and visitors a chance to engage with the city’s past and present.
